The Ultimate Guide To Go-Kart Drifting

Go-Kart Drifting

It isn’t necessary to be a pro racer to drift a go-kart.

The techniques can be complicated for some, like how to regulate steering and brakes. They are more than just what meets the eye, though. We’re here to let you know that anyone can learn how to drift—just as long as you have access to this article! So whether you’re a newbie or an enthusiast looking for tips on improving your skill set, read on!

Should You Drift Karts During Races?

As many of our competitors can attest, real racing comes down to a few fractions of a second. The difference between winning and finishing the second can often be just three-tenths of a second.

During rally races driven on dirt, snow, or mud, drifting is a valid technique. Drifting karts, however, can lead to losing traction, speed, and seconds in a real race. Most rental karts enable you to drift only a little, making real drifting challenging.

The best way to create maximum speed is to let your wheels roll. Drifting wears out the drifter kart’s tires much faster than normal driving, so it’s not good for them.

7 Easy Steps To Drift a Go-Kart

Step 1 – Identify the Right Circumstances

To drift well, you’ll first need to know your go-kart thoroughly. Making sure you do this under the right circumstances is also important. Ensure that everything around you is safe, that there is no other kart behind you, and that everything in front of you is clear as well.

During a go-kart race, you should try to avoid drifting as it reduces your speed. The more traction your wheels have on the track, the more you lose speed and lap time.

Identifying a corner is vital for drifting your go-kart. We recommend that you start drifting on a corner with a 90-degree angle if you’re new to it. Making sure that there is a straight section before and after the corner is also good practice.

Step 2 – Approach the Corner From Outside

If you have identified a corner where you plan to practice drifting, stick to it every time, so you have a similar situation to practice at. Whenever you repeat an attempt, make sure not to go back in the wrong direction.

Make sure you remain on the racing line as you start your approach. The track barrier should be at least a few inches away from your go-kart. Thus, you should align your go-kart with the outside corner.

You want to avoid reducing your speed abruptly, as you aren’t following the race line. Maintain a steady speed so you can drift. You should slow down as you approach the starting line and turn point.

Step 3 – Turn Your Steering Wheel To Lean Outward

You should start turning your steering wheel a few feet after you’ve passed the racing line. Turning the steering wheel before or on the racing line will only make you come up short and will make you unable to clear the corner.

Getting the right amount of steering wheel movement is tricky. Your go-kart won’t drift if you understeer.

Oversteering forces the back of the car sideways, so it swings outward.

You will understeer and hit the barrier if you turn the steering wheel too slowly. Oversteering will make your go-kart spin out if the back swings out too far. You need to strike a balance. At first, it might seem overwhelming, but you will have to countersteer actively to avoid turning into a spin.

Your kart should swing outward when you feel it moving sideways. If you do so, you’ll shift your center of gravity and prevent your wheels near the apex from getting a maximum grip.

Step 4 – Feather Your Brakes

While approaching the corner, never slam your brakes as you slow down. You will need to slow down too much if you do that with a straight steering wheel. It will simply result in slowing down or understeering.

If you slam your brakes while turning your steering wheel, you will spin out instantly. In this case, you should feather the brake pads.

Your brake pad’s sensitivity level will determine the amount of brake engagement you need for drifting. The right amount of pressure on the brakes is crucial for getting the perfect drift speed.

In addition, you want to avoid too hard braking during the drift. The ideal situation is not to brake much but rather to countersteer.

While drifting, you can trim down your speed slightly by feathering your brakes if you have become too fast.

Step 5 – Counter-Steer to Avoid a Spin Out

In terms of drifting, countersteering is the trickiest technique to learn. Maintaining the correct direction of your front wheels, you should countersteer just the right amount.

The back of your go-kart will swing out a lot more if you countersteer too little, and you’ll start spinning out. This happens because your kart naturally spins when you drift.

Your drift will begin to exit early if you countersteer too much, so you will end up heading toward the outward barrier.

To master countersteering, you need to acquire a feel for how much and how often to do it. Keep your steering wheel in a small circle and avoid turning it too fast. You need to practice positioning your go-kart when it is drifting. It won’t take long for you to grasp it.

When driving your go-kart, it’s very typical to adjust the steering wheel’s angle continually. Also, you need to adjust your kart’s backward swing to make sure it’s as straight as possible.

Avoid moving your hands on the steering wheel. A quarter-to-three-spoke position keeps a tight grip on the wheel.

Step 6 – Pulse the Gas Pedal During the Drift

The boat will already be circling the next corner at the moment. If you don’t drift out of the corner, you won’t lose too much speed. While drifting, you will need to control your speed and momentum to avoid these problems.

Maintaining the same speed during the entire drift is ideal. This is impossible, meaning you need to manually accelerate to keep up with your go-kart, as tires hitting asphalt cause the slowdown.

Pulsing the acceleration pedal periodically can help you achieve this. When you pulse, you step on the accelerator quickly. Every time you feel you are drifting too far outward or your speed is slipping, try this.

You should not slam the gas pedal while drifting. Your car will most likely oversteer and spin out as a result. Over time, you’ll adjust to the transition.

Step 7 – Realign Your Kart With the Straight Section

You need to align your go-kart with the straight section so that you can have a strong performance. As you drift toward the straight, when the front of your go-kart reaches the racing line, you should countersteer so much to level it with the straight.

As you approach the straightaway, remember to accelerate faster and push the accelerator harder the closer to your go-kart aligning with the straight.

Keeping your steering wheel moving viscously will help you avoid fishtailing. A similar issue usually occurs during the realignment of a straight section. Your kart will align back with the race line only after you countersteer and compensate for oversteering.

FAQs

How fast do drift karts go?

Depending on the drift kart, its speed can range from 2 mph to 14 mph. While most karts top out around 40-50 mph, this is a steady speed under control. This speed is comfortable because it doesn’t send you flying off the track and hurting other racers and spectators.

Is drifting faster than regular driving?

By looking at this differently, we can say that driving at high speeds allows you to drift, so yes, drifting is fast. The driver must get the wheels turning faster than the traction can accommodate to propel the car sideways.

Is drifting bad for your go-kart?

During a go-kart race, you should try to avoid drifting as it reduces your speed. Your wheels lose valuable speed and lap time if they don’t have the maximum traction on the track.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! Now you can have fun navigating chicanes, bends, hairpin turns, and all kinds of corners. Make sure you practice extra safety. Practicing drifting go-karts in a corner is intimidating. Try drifting in a large and empty area first.

No matter what others tell you, drifting does not give you an advantage in a race. From a physics perspective alone, it makes no sense. Drifting should, therefore, only be fun.

All in all, always use proper safety equipment and enjoy drifting for fun!
