4 Quick Steps To Adjust a Torque Converter on a Go-Kart

Are you wondering what it takes to adjust a torque converter on a go-kart?

Well, it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

You only need to move the spring on the torque converter into a pre-drilled hole, and it’s done.

Though they deliver different torque levels at different rpm ranges, you can still adjust them.

Please find out how it works by reading on.

Understanding The Torque Converter Parts

A torque converter features the following parts;

  • Movable Face with Cam
  • Spring
  • Fixed Cam
  • Adjustment Holes

There are several components attached to the driven pulley. There is a movable face with a cam, which is attached to the fixed cam.

There is tension between the face and the cam due to the red spring mechanism in between. The adjustment hole numbered 1 on the end of the spring corresponds to the end of the spring. You can have one hole in your spring by default.

Steps To Adjust your Go-Kart Torque Converter

The following steps will demonstrate how to adjust the torque converter spring. It’s always a good idea to be cautious whenever you disassemble and reassemble a torque converter.

Remove the Parts

A torque converter must have access to its spring to adjust. On the fixed cam, you must remove the nut and snap ring first.

Proceed to remove the fixed cam and the spring from the torque converter after removing the snap ring and the nut. The rest can remain as it is. You can also adjust your torque converter without removing the chain or belt.

You can also remove the nut, snap ring, cam, and spring during a fixed period. When working on go-karts on a stand, you have better accessibility to the components as they are on the stand. You don’t need to have a go-kart stand for this process.

Adjust the Spring

You can start setting the torque converter springs after removing the nut, snap ring, cam, and spring. The end of the spring usually fits into three pre-drilled holes. The slot will be set to number 1 by default.

Next, you’ll adjust the system. If you want to change the number of holes in the spring, you can detach it from the fixed cam. Each of the three holes has a number.

Your go-kart torque converter will produce more torque as you place the spring into the higher number.

For a quick insight, you can use the reference below:

  • Hole 1: For flat roads – Normal Torque
  • Hole 2: For uneven roads – More Torque
  • Hole 3: For off-road usage – High Torque

Reassemble the Parts

As soon as you decide what setting your torque converter needs, reassemble the fixed cam and put the spring back on. Putting the parts back together is a straightforward process.

Put the torque converter back together in reverse order by placing the parts back on.

Start by placing the spring back against the torque converter with the fixed cam. You must insert the spring’s end into the torque converter’s hole, as you would with a fixed cam.

When slotting the fixed cam back in, you’ll see two flat surfaces in the hole, so you’ll want to align them. Continuing to press it fully in is a bit tricky here, but you’ll get there.

Assemble the Snap Ring and Nut

It’s now time to preload the torque converter. By turning the fixed cam counterclockwise until it reaches the stop position, you can get the torque converter to respond. It will require you to press the fixed cam against the torque converter.

As you continue to press, place the snap ring on again. Preloading the torque converter spring holds the fixed cam in place. It’s now just a matter of screwing in the nut.

How Would Adjusting the Spring Help?

Adjusting the torque converter involves repositioning the spring end into a different hole. It tightens the spring’s tension. You can get more torque from your torque converter if the spring tension is tight.

You should be aware, though, that more torque translates into more wear on the components. It is essential to consider this when you adjust the torque converter on your go-kart.

Can You Drill More Holes Yourself?

If you need more torque, you can drill the fourth hole. Be aware, though, that a torque converter with more torque will also wear more quickly.

Adjustment holes are not always present on torque converters. It is possible to drill some by yourself in this case. To ensure a perfect fit, the hole diameter should be about half an inch larger than the hole gap.

Make sure you use the same gap size and unit diameter on any additional holes you add to an existing drilled torque converter. You can also modify the type of spring (usually, there are different colors) to change the output of the torque converter.

Can you replace the converter without removing the transmission?

The good news is that you might not have to replace or rebuild your transmission if you just need to replace your torque converter. It is possible to service or replace torque converters as one unit.

Can fluid get into the torque converter?

Besides acting like a hydraulic pump, your torque converter also links your engine and your transmission. Torque converters use centrifugal pumps as their power source.

As the screen spins, fluids fling to the outside, much like the spin cycle on a washing machine tosses water and clothes out. The vacuum created by flinging fluid outside pulls fluid toward the center.

How can you test your torque converter?

Press the accelerator down for a time of two to three seconds while pressing on the brake pedal. Keeping the transmission under five seconds is a good idea. When the engine stalls, it reaches its maximum engine RPM.

How can you determine whether your torque converter is not working?

There are several go-kart torque converter problems that appear to make the vehicle slow or idle. Some of them include worn-out belts, sluggish or poor acceleration, moving kart while the engine is idle, and the belt getting concave on sides. These problems may require you to install a new torque converter.

Final Thoughts

It is easy to adjust the torque converter on a go-kart, as you can see.

Firstly, familiarize yourself with the parts in order. Then you’ll need to understand how to disassemble and reassemble your torque converter.

In general, the bigger the hole on the spring, the higher the torque converter will output. Remember that higher torque can put more strain on components!
