For those without a start/stop switch, this is an alternative. It can automatically shut down your engine in an emergency, like a stuck throttle or a failing brake.

When you buy a kill switch that fits your go-kart engine, wiring it is less complicated than it sounds. There is usually a choice between a toggle switch and a remote kill switch.

Here are the steps to follow and put your skills to work!

Gather the Necessary Tools

Installing a go-kart kill switch does not require expertise. Collect all of the necessary tools and parts to do the job. As well as choosing a toggle switch or a remote switch, you will need to think about how you want to connect the two.

Remove the Flywheel

Use the screwdriver to pry the back end of the flywheel free with a flat head screwdriver or pry bar after removing the bolt.

Please do this gently so as not to damage or break your flywheel. Add lubricant around the fixed areas of the flywheel if it proves difficult to remove.

The flywheel should gradually lift with this. In addition, make sure these do not fall on the floor. You can now access the magneto after removing the flywheel.

Connect the Kill Switch to the Engine

You must locate a metal nut on your kart’s magneto before connecting the kill switch. Now, you must connect your compatible kill switch to the metal nut on your magneto.

You will need to connect your kill switch’s other wire to the ground wire attached to your go-kart. Keeping your ground wire connected to a bolt-on engine block of your go-kart is the best option.

It is necessary to loosen the bolt on the engine block first and then tighten the ground wire onto it. Upon appropriately connecting the wire to the engine block bolt, it will become grounded immediately.

Run the Wires

You will need to run your wires from your kill switch to the front part of your kart once you have the wires attached to the engine. You’ll need to figure out where you want to install it.

The kill switch toggle typically mounts on the steering wheel or the steering column of go-karts.

Under the seat with the frame, the wires are usually run from the back to the front. Wires and cables should not dangle. If you need help holding the wire down, you can use wire clamps.

A wire clamp will also interfere with contact between the wire and any hot component of your engine system and prevent it from becoming loose. Using heat tapes will shield the wires from exposure to heat if this is not possible.

Mount the Kill Switch To The Frame

Your next step will be to choose where to install the kill switch after you have learned how to wire it. Place the kill switch in an area that is easily accessible. Accordingly, the best places for the steering wheel and the column are at the same height.

Drilling a hole on the frame of the placement area might be necessary to place your switch correctly. You can secure it to the frame using a bolt or hose clamp.

Reattach the Flywheel

You should reattach the flywheel to your kart engine after performing all the necessary checks and inspections. It’s just a matter of reversing the first step.

Replacing the flywheel and the cover is the first step. When coupling your flywheel back, make sure you don’t damage any wires. You can then tighten the bolt with an impact wrench.

You can test the kill switch once more before you head for the Go-Kart track. You’ll be able to test it one final time after following these steps. As you reattach the flywheel, check that any wiring has not come loose or damaged.

Why Install a Kill Switch on a Go-Kart?
