6 Quick Steps On How To Clean A Go-Kart Carburetor

Have you been neglecting your go-kart’s carburetor?

Proper maintenance of your carburetor allows it to mix air to fuel optimally. It boosts your racing performance. Cleaning your go-kart carburetor should be one of your regular maintenance schedules.

The following guide will cover carburetor cleaning from start to finish. You’ll learn how to take the carburetor off your go-kart, clean the parts, and what to use to clean it.

Gather Your Tools & Supplies

In order to begin, you need to gather up all the necessary tools and supplies required for cleaning the carburetor.

Required Tools:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Wrenches or socket set

Required Supplies:

  • Carb and choke cleaner
  • Carburetor parts cleaner
  • Gasket set or carb rebuild kit

Remove the Carburetor

Firstly, you must remove the go-kart carburetor from your vehicle. When cleaning the internal components of your carburetor, you will need to remove your carburetor once it mounts on your kart. Therefore, you should remove it immediately.

Components to remove:

  • Fuel line from inlet & outlet
  • Intake Manifold connected to the air filter
  • Engine housing
  • Gaskets and spacers

Make sure you can easily access the go-kart carburetor and that the engine is off. Placing a cloth underneath when removing the parts is the best option.

There may be an internal carburetor in the engine housing, depending on the kind of engine. You’ll need the owner’s manual to remove the carburetor in that case.

Disassemble the Carburetor

Deconstruct the carburetor after removing it from the go-kart engine. Use a cloth, brush, or air spray to cleanse the outside of the tool before starting the disassembly process.

  1. Float Bowl
  2. Float Needle
  3. Float Pin
  4. Float
  5. Main Jet
  6. Pilot Jet
  7. Fuel Screw
  8. Choke

As you begin removing the float bowl, you will need to remove it from the top. You need to disassemble the float bowl, float needle, float pin, and float itself after removing the float bowl. The screws hold the first three components together.

Carefully remove the main jet and pilot from the carburetor. You will also need to take out the fuel screw and the choke.

You should remember how many turns it takes to remove the fuel screw since it is in a particular position. It will be necessary for later reassembly.

Clean All Parts of the Carburetor

You can now start cleaning the carburetor after removing all the internal components. Arrange everything on a table if possible.

The critical parts of the carburetor should be the carburetor bowl, the float needle, the float pin, the float, the main jet, the pilot jet, the fuel screw, and the choke.

Depending on what kind of carburetor you have, you can clean the internal components using a cloth, brush, or carburetor cleaner. Any carburetor cleaner will do.

You can follow this guide to clean all of the things you removed from the previous step. Then, clean each one individually on a cloth.

Cleaning the Float Bowl

  • Your first task will be to clean the float bowl.
  • Using a cloth, wash the rubber gasket to remove any debris.
  • You should clean the carb cleaner directly from the float bowl.
  • Apply the cleaner to the float bowl’s inside and outside surfaces.
  • Then, widen the line with a cloth after spraying both surfaces equally.

Use a cloth or air spray if you aren’t using a carb cleaner to remove debris and unwanted particles.

Cleaning the Float, Float Needle and Float Pin

  • It is possible to clean all three components simultaneously.
  • There is no need to use carb cleaner here.
  • Spray or wipe these components down with an air spray or a cloth.

Cleaning the Main Jet & Pilot Jet

Using a cloth won’t be possible due to the small openings in these jets. Ensure they are in perfect condition before reinstalling them into the carburetor by inspecting them before and after cleaning.

  • Apply carb cleaner both outside and inside of the jet.
  • Point the straw toward the larger opening of the jet and use an air spray.
  • Ensure you remove all carb cleaner by doing this.

Cleaning the Fuel Screw

  • Clean the carburetor screw with carb cleaner.
  • Wipe off any remaining product with a cloth.
  • Using a cloth will suffice if you do not have a carb cleaner.

Cleaning the Choke of the Carburetor

It is easy to clean the choke, which works similarly to cleaning the fuel screw.

  • Apply sufficient carb spray.
  • Make sure you wipe off all parts with a cloth before you go.

Cleaning the Carburetor

There will be a variety of intakes, inlets, and valves in the carburetor.

  • Clean the entire carburetor, both inside and outside, to ensure no debris is left behind. Using a carb cleaner and cloth is best for this.
  • Use air spray on smaller components such as valves and nozzles.
  • Examine the inlets thoroughly for clogs, as they may cause problems.
  • Lastly, inspect the entire carburetor carefully after wiping it down with a cloth.

Soak All Components

Float the carburetor and its components in the solution for 10 minutes, and allow to soak thoroughly.

Scrub all metal components with a brass brush and clean plastic components with a stiff nylon brush. Don’t forget to clean the tiny vents.

Remove excess moisture from small holes by using compressed air. Allow the air to dry completely after rinsing all carburetor components with clean water. Use the cleaning solution to clean the small parts as well.

Reinstall the Carburetor

Your go-kart carburetor is now clean of all of its essential parts. Now reassemble it. Simply reverse the steps you followed to disassemble your carburetor.

  • Install the choke (8) and fuel screw (7) first.
  • Position the pilot jet (6) and main jet (5).
  • Put back on the floating device, float needle, and float pin (2, 3, 4).
  • Lastly, return the float bowl to its original position with the rubber gasket in place.

You must mount the carburetor before installing the gaskets. During the intake manifold, reconnect the fuel lines (inlet and outlet) and the air filter.

Go-kart engines come with housings. Make sure to replace the housing carefully in the same manner as you removed it.

Clean All Related Parts

You should perform regular maintenance on the carburetors of your go-kart. Go-kart carburetors are prone to becoming clogged or dirty, which interferes with performance.

It’s also important to clean other parts connecting to the carburetor. When cleaning your carburetor, you should consider cleaning the following items:

  • Fuel filter
  • Fuel tank
  • Fuel lines
  • Air filter
  • Intake manifold

Therefore, your carburetor will perform better, last longer, and require less maintenance as a result.

FAQs

Can you clean a carburetor without removing it?

There is no problem with cleaning a carburetor without removing it. It can, however, never replace the wholesome cleansing exercises. This is because it doesn’t affect the engine’s entire length and breadth.

What is the best method of cleaning a carburetor without taking it apart?

If you want to clean a carburetor without removing it, you will have to remove the bottom bowls. Spray the carburetor cleaner inside the bowls, let it sit for a while, and then respray it to cover all the interior surfaces. Replacing the bowls and starting the motorcycle will let you know how it runs.

Will vinegar clean a carburetor?

Yes, it works. Most people simply boil and cleanse their carbs with vinegar or even lemon water. Chemical carb cleaners, however, are more common. Fast-acting and highly toxic, these agents work quickly. Make sure you follow instructions, wear protective gear, and do it in a well-ventilated space.

How to clean a small engine carburetor?

You cannot spray the carburetor when the engine is off since you cannot clean it without propulsion. While the engine is running, simply spray it directly into the carburetor center while it is running. It will be easy to remove any deposits clogging the carburetor.

Final Thoughts

The carburetor’s performance will suffer if not cleaned. Thus, make sure you follow the steps given above on a regular basis.

Remember that different engines have different procedures for taking out the carburetor. Ready to take your go-kart racing performance to the next level?
