How to Remove the Predator 212cc Engine Speed Governor?

predator-212cc-governor-removal

The governor of the Predator 212cc engine controls the fuel intake once it reaches 3,600 rpm. So, you cannot go faster than that. In fact, it’s a mechanical component, not an electronic one.

So, if you have access to the internal components of your engine, you can remove it. You may also need some tools to open up an engine for Predator 212cc governor removal.

For removing the speed governor of the Predator 212cc engine, these are the steps you need to follow:

Gather the Tools

You will need these tools to access the engine, so be sure to have them available before we begin.

M6 Socket + Impact Wrench

Due to the engine’s Honda-like specifications, the Predator 212cc uses bolts with a diameter of 10mm (M6 metric size). The M6 bolt is equivalent to a US 6-point 1/4-inch wrench socket.

It is also possible to use an appropriate torque wrench, although we find it much easier to use an impact wrench with an M6 socket.

Remove the Go-Kart Engine

First, take your go-kart Predator 212cc engine out. In order to place it on a workbench or table, remove the engine from the mounting bracket.

While the engine is mounted, you cannot remove the speed governor since it needs to drain its oil and access its internal components.

You must disconnect the fuel lines and drive chain before removing your Predator 212 engine. You should now place the engine on a stable surface, such as a workbench or a sturdy table.

In some cases, removing the fuel tank on top of the engine may be necessary so that you can reach the exterior governor mechanism.

Drain Out the Oil

To start with, you must remove the remaining oil from your Predator 212cc before going inside. The water will leak out as soon as you begin working on it. Put your engine upright on your workbench to drain the oil.

Remove the oil drain plug from beneath a bowl or tray. At the bottom of the Predator engine, there is a bolt and a washer with a diameter of 10mm (M6).

To drain the engine oil completely, remove the oil filter with a fitting socket or wrench. By lifting the other end of the engine, you will ensure all the oil has drained out. As soon as the oil stops flowing, replace the oil plug bolt and washer.

Remove the Transmission

As well as removing the engine side cover, you must remove your transmission. Remove the bolt and washer attached to the driver pulley of your torque converter if you have one. To remove the torque converter backplate from the engine, remove the four bolts holding it in place.

You can remove the clutch by removing the bolt and washer from the crankshaft, then slide the clutch off the key and crankshaft.

You can now simply slide off the transmission after removing the chain from the crankshaft or jackshaft.

Take Off the Side Plate

Your Predator 212cc engine is now ready for you to examine. The engine side cover should be pointing towards you, and the crankshaft should be pointing towards your face. There are six bolts (M6) that secure the engine cover to the engine. To remove these, you’ll need a socket or wrench that fits M6.

After removing all bolts, you can either flip the engine over so that its crankshaft points upward or leave it standing upright. Either cut a thin, sharp edge into the engine cover or hold a long tool against the oil intake to remove the engine cover.

There is a dipstick on the front of the car. It’s important not to damage the seal between the engine cover and the gasket. Gaskets typically remain attached to side covers.

Taking the gasket off is not necessary, as you would have to reassemble it later. After removing the cover, lay it aside.

Remove the Speed Governor

The location of the governor is crucial before you remove it. The governor is on the left side of the engine when looking inside.

It is usually the governor arm that regulates the speed of the gear. Another 10mm nut (on the engine’s exterior) connects the governor arm to the engine.

Remove this nut with the same socket or wrench. Using this feature, you can enlarge or decrease the governor’s arm. You can easily access the governor by simply breaking or cutting off the arm.

It’s now time to remove the governor itself. You’ll also need to remove several parts, which can be a bit tricky. Below are some parts to note.

Required Parts:

  • Lock Pin
  • Clip
  • Washer
  • Governor Gear
  • Shaft

First, remove the governor’s lock pin and its shaft. After you remove these, you can proceed to take out the clip and the gear itself. Under the governor gear, remove the washer.

Due to space constraints, these parts may be challenging to reach. We strongly recommend that you use pliers to accomplish this task. If the pin or washer is smaller, use a sharp object that you can use to push it up from below.

Make sure none of the five components remains in the engine after removing all of them. You should thoroughly clean out your Predator engine before you start it, so be sure that nothing is left behind.

Remount the Predator Engine

After removing the governor and ensuring no remnants are inside the engine, it’s time to install the predator 212cc engine side cover and the gasket back onto the engine.

You can accomplish this by putting back the side cover until the sides of the engine seal completely. Reinstall the bolts in the opposite direction so that both bolts push the seal in the same direction.

Reinstall the chain, install the Predator 212cc engine, test it out, and you’re ready to ride. You should no longer have a 3,600 rpm cap on your go-kart.
